what to wear to a rock concert

both georgina and I deliberated on numerous outfits before the Hollerado show last weekend, but in two different approaches. dressing for a rock concert is similar to packing for a trip or preparing for a day at the zoo: it's a night out, but it's a night spent standing (and dancing), while dodging beer cans and sweaty moshers. or, if you're anything like me, being a sweaty mosher.

okay, okay, that's only one type of concert, but the next three outfits will answer some recurring questions: how can i look fabulous at the early morning meet-and-greet after being smashed up against smelly drunks? how can i stand out on the balcony amongst the other girls? and how can i dress for an outdoor summer festival with unpredictable weather?

the "classic" rock concert (general floor admission)

the classic

This outfit applies to any raves and other shows you'll be on your feet for at least four hours. unless you intend on hovering around the back of the room or standing rigid, heels are not recommended. about 50% of the people around you will be sporting a pair of converse, so you can either join the fun with your brightest/roughest sneakers, or wear similar rocker chic flats- like combat boots!

jeans were originally created to be durable work wear for gold miners and are great for dancing in close-quarters, too! while those fishnets might be edgy, they're easily torn by the metal barrier or someone's studded belt. just don't forget to belt them if they're loose at all. a thick pair of leggings will keep you equally warm outside after the show, if you prefer them to jeans.

waterproof makeup is a must; the last thing you want is streaks of mascara down your face along with the sweat beads and wet bangs stuck to your forehead. keep loose accessories to a minimum. on another note, don't wear spikes. while they great, security may ask you to remove any articles of sharp clothing.

the brat with connections (or the girly country show)

i've never been to a seated venue (except the Molson Ampitheatre; however, that was a metal lineup, and everyone was standing anyway), but i have been on a backstage pass before. for your safety, this is the only situation where we'll allow you to wear heels to a concert. when you're backstage/seated, you can bring extra belongings and a nice purse; because when you are moving, you're not grinding by a thousand other people.

the outdoor festival (hopefully, it won't rain)

the festival

coachella and lollapalooza are my favourite times of year besides the four major fashion weeks for scoping out street style. after all, music and fashion do fall hand-in-hand. generally, these events are held over a number of days, during the day. there's unlimited space and sunny, clear skies... and on occasion, light rain. but as long as you remember to stay hydrated and check the weather before you head out, you ought to be fine.

flats or cork wedge sandals are great for this time of year, and due to the combined springiness of the cork and ground, wedges won't hurt your feet even if you are running around for long hours! plus, unless you're model tall, it'll prevent the hem of your dress from getting dirtied up.

dressing boho to summer festivals gets me in the mood for a relaxing show, in contrast with those stuffy, crowded concerts during the rest of the year. i still recommend travelling light, with a cross-body bag, because you'll be on your feet all day, and it'll free up your hands to join that impromptu pow-wow over there.

now it's your turn
